Byrd joined the KKK in 1942 and was a leader of his chapter. He wrote a letter praising the KKK in 1947 and defended the Klan in his Senate run in 1958. He voted against Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas and he filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
